Lighting Upgrade Case Study

The Client:

Parish Church, Reading, Berkshire

Background:

Litenow were called to advise on the replacement of the existing light fittings within the main church area. Lamps were failing on a frequent basis and often members of the congregation would attempt to carry out the re-lamping of the fittings. Due to the mounting height of the fittings and difficult access, re-lamping was very difficult, often dangerous, and would usually result in an electrical contractor being called out to complete the work.

Existing Lighting:

- 20 x 500 Watt tungsten halogen filament floodlights
- Lamp Life: 2000 hours
- Total energy consumption: 10kW

The Problem:

The light fittings were mounted at approximately 5 metres from floor level. Frequent re-lamping of the fittings was required due to limited lamp life. The cost of access equipment and personnel to carry out the frequent re-lamping was excessive. The heat output from the lights was of little benefit due to a very high ceiling.

Proposed Lighting

- 20 x 150 Watt Metal Halide floodlight fittings
- Lamp Life: 15,000 Hours
- Total energy consumption: 4.2 kW (allowing for control gear)

Solution:

Litenow replaced the existing light fittings with 20 x 150 Watt Metal Halide floodlight fittings mounted at approximately the same height.

The church is now illuminated with crisper, whiter light which is maintained over a longer period due to the improved metal halide lamp life.

Improved light output, reduced running costs, and savings on maintenance call outs is the result of this Litenow solution.

Energy savings of 58%!
