The government have said they want to see smart meters installed into all UK premises by 2020, so have you got one?
On average, the Carbon Trust, estimates that UK businesses waste 20% of the energy they buy. Clearly a meter system will not be able to eliminate waste BUT it will provide organisations with information, which should enable them to understand where that wastage is happening and address it.
So what is it?
A smart meter will monitor all gas and electricity usage, automatically collect data from your premises and send it to the energy supplier. There is no need for meter readings, and the information is very accurate, even in a remote or unmanned property that meter readers would find difficult to gain access to.
What does it do?
This will give an organisation a wealth of information, helping them to fully understand their energy consumption. Therefore, enabling a company to look into why power is being consumed overnight, or at the weekends or when the premises is closed. Why some weeks more energy is consumed than others – often substantially so. Why different premises, of the same size, who produce the same amount of revenue, use different amounts of energy and how consumption is reduced when various equipment is switched off.
A smart meter will usually give you the ability to set alarms which alert you to over-usage, and can therefore prevent an unexpectedly high bill.
What is the benefit to you?
Aside the obvious benefit of being able to adjust your energy usage and save money on your bills … you can also now be sure of completely accurate billing, no more estimated meter readings. Saving energy will reduce your carbon footprint and help meet carbon reducing targets.
In addition to this you will be able to change energy suppliers much more quickly, enabling you to take advantage of better tariffs and fees. Also, as with all new technology, there will over time be improvements and enhancements offering more services and functions.
Do remember that one of the best ways to reduce your energy usage is to install LED lighting into your premises!
